My toddler – picky eating and independence
For the most part my two toddlers are good eaters. They have their moments, of course, but overall (and at least for now) they are at least trying a variety of foods and eating what I ask them to eat.
My one son was a little picky when it came to breakfast. He might eat half a banana and some Cheerios but not much else. So I started giving him a choice as to what flavor of oatmeal he wanted that morning – and so far it’s working in getting him to eat his oatmeal.
After he’s settled in his high chair with his milk and banana I come over with the box of oatmeal. I tell him to pick what kind of oatmeal he wants that day and he reaches in to pull out one envelope. He gets the biggest smile on his face when he does it. I think he likes the fact he gets to choose what he’s going to eat. When it’s cereal that he’s chosen he does a pretty good job in eating it. He might not eat the whole bowl, but he does eat quite a bit more than he did when I’d make it and put it in front of him.
I guess he’s just starting to want to have a bit of independence and a say in what he eats. If it works I’m not going to argue with it, that’s for sure!
