How technology has changed since I was a child

I couldn’t sleep last night so I ended up watching the news for a few hours.  I’m not sure when I saw this story, but it was about how far technology has come in the past few years.  The story talked about how just 20 years ago we saw the first portable personal tape players with headsets.  I can’t believe it was that long ago, but then again I don’t really remember a time when I didn’t have a portable music player.  For many years it was a portable cassette tape player, then my portable CD player and now I have  portable MP3 players.

My children are very young and this story got me to thinking about the advances in technology they’ll see over their lifetime.  When I was a child we had a rotary telephone in our living room, just one phone for the house.  Now both my husband and I have our own cell phones.  Handheld video games?  They consisted of some very clunky games like Marvin or Simon, not at all like the video game systems you can get today for your children.  It was beyond comprehension that you could have a small camera where you could see the pictures right away and have them printed in under an hour at the drugstore. In high school I would drop off film and pick it up several days later – the bad blurry pictures along with the good.

Who knows what we’ll see in the next ten or fifteen years.  But it will be fun to find out where technology goes for our children.
