Protecting your family computer from dangers on the Internet
If you’re reading this article then you are familiar with the Internet. Are you familiar with all the dangers that are lurking out there that can harm you and your computer – threats like spyware, computer viruses, adware, and phishing scams? Sometimes the consequences are more annoying than dangerous – like getting an unending stream of pop up ads while on the Internet. Some of the other consequences are more significant, like the loss of data from your computer or even identity theft.
When computer experts start talking in their computer language it’s very easy to get confused or overwhelmed. This doesn’t make you any less intelligent – I would guess that most people would describe themselves as “not technical” when it comes to computers. Protecting your computer isn’t all that difficult. Here are some of the basics you need to keep your computer safe.
- First, make sure you are current with all the security patches for the version of Microsoft Windows on your PC. The Microsoft web site gives you some good instructions on how to set your computer to automatically receive these updates.
- Always use a good anti-virus program on your PC like PC Tools Antivirus or Panda Antivirus. These programs will scan your computer to detect and remove any viruses, are continuously updated with new virus information, and will give you real time protection against any viruses trying to get on your computer while on the Internet.
- Use a good anti-spyware or spyware removal program on your computer. I like PC Tools Spyware Doctor because it can detect, remove and block spyware and adware from your computer and is constantly updated with information on new threats. Plus it’s really easy to use if you don’t consider yourself to be a technical person.
- Use a personal firewall. What is a firewall? A firewall controls the communication between your computer and the Internet. Most wireless and wired routers have firewalls built right into them – check your user manual to see if your router has that function. If not you might want to consider buying a software based firewall.
- Always run the most up to date version of your Internet Explorer. Set your browser security levels to the highest or most secure levels).
- When reading your email, set your messages to be read in text rather than HTML format. Be cautious about opening attachments from people you don’t know. Don’t ever provide personal information if requested in an email message. Contact the company directly by telephone if you have any questions, and get that phone number from another source other than the message (like your most recent statement).
It isn’t as hard as you might think to keep your computer safe while on the Internet. The software programs mentioned here are easy to configure and install, and you can even download them directly from the web sites so no trip to the store is required. With a few minutes of work and your common sense you can protect yourself and your computer while you are working on the Internet.
