Follow your instincts as a mom, not the books you read

It seems as if there is a book for everything.  Stop into your local bookstore and you’ll see books on everything from writing computer programs to international travel.  The parenting section at your local bookstore is filled with all sorts of books telling parents how they should raise their children and what they should do.  Let’s face it – our parents didn’t have any books or manuals on child rearing and they did a pretty good job.  How did they do it?  They followed their instincts and did what they thought was best.  They might have made a few mistakes, but overall did all right.  Don’t give yourself information overload by reading every book on the shelf – some of which will contradict the others.  Just go with the flow when it comes to parenting.

Becoming a parent is a scary thing.  Once you bring your child home from the hospital you’re pretty much on your own.  Many parents become worried with every cry, cough or sleepless night.  This is natural – if you are having these feelings take comfort in the fact that you are not alone.  However, confidence in your ability to take care of your child will be your first step in getting over these fears.  Children can sense fear and uncertainty, so it is important to always remain calm while projecting a confident and positive attitude.  If you think you can’t do it then you won’t be able to do it.

Follow your instincts when it comes to caring for your child.  Don’t watch every television show and read every magazine about parenting.  You’ll make mistakes as a mom.  Acknowledge that fact and move on.  You learn from your mistakes.  Learn the lessons and move on.  Draw upon your family and friends and their parenting experiences for support.  My husband always says that what your child needs to do is eat, sleep, play and make messy diapers.  That’s it in a nutshell.  Give your children love, which is the most important thing.

Parenting is a continuous learning process.  Don’t be afraid to follow your gut instinct and try different tactics for dealing with situations.  Learn from your mistakes and experiences while always loving your children.  That is what will make you a great mom.
