Mom’s favorite motorcycle
Is is strange for a mom to love motorcycles? When thinking of Honda motorcycles gold wing cannot be beat. The classic GL1000 was first produced in 1975 and remained in production until 1979. During those four years, the only thing changed about the motorcycle was minor changes to the exhaust system. Listed as a touring bike, the Honda gold wing came as a bare bike. This cause may others to develop fairings and luggage for the gold wing. It was not until 1979, the last year it was in production, that Honda finally released its own line of saddlebags and trunk. They never did produce a fairing for the gold wing.
The gold wing was introduced at the Cologne Motorcycle Show in 1974. At the time, it had cutting edge technology such as the water cooled engine (only the second Japanese bike to be produced with that type of engine), a shaft drive, a one piece silencer (which made it a very quite motorcycle), and the transmission under the engine rather than behind it.
While production of the GL1000 ended in 1979, the GL1100 was released from 1980 until 1983. It was almost the same bike initially, but had a larger cylinder and electronic ignition. Honda produced the GL1200 from 1984 until 1987. The frame was larger and stiffer, making it a smoother ride. The GL1500, in 1988, brought the most changes ever to the gold wing model. Things such as a digital ignition helped outclass the other competition. The GL1800 was released in 2001. It was a lighter weight bike than the GL1500, due to the high strength aluminum frame.
