Don’t fall into the Super Mom Syndrome trap

Whether it’s 2007 or 1957 all mothers have been at risk of suffering from the Super Mom Syndrome.  Where do you “catch” this syndrome?  It’s as close as your living room – the TV.  Television shows are very good at making being a mother look easy.  In the 1950’s and early 1960’s television shows portrayed the mom as being the perfect parent, wife, cook, housekeeper, and friend.  Today television shows portray the working mother as being able to do it all – have a great career, take care of her family, keep a perfectly clean and organized house while always looking slim and beautiful.

Fortunately for us television is not real life – unfortunately, many women don’t realize this.  They fall into the trap of feeling like they have to do it all in order to be a good mother.  These feelings of having to be Super Mom will take a toll on them physically and emotionally, while affecting the people in their lives at home.

Being a mom is probably the hardest job you’ll ever have.  It’s stressful and demanding.  Don’t deny the fact that it is hard.  However, you don’t have to be hard on yourself if you can’t do it all perfectly.  Try to find the balance in your life by focusing on the number one priority – your children.  Your children are only young once.  Don’t worry about keeping the perfect house, making the perfect dinners, and being the perfect spouse.  You are human.  Love your family and come to the conclusion that you don’t have to be perfect to be Super Mom – you just have to love your children.
