Tips for reducing sugar in your diet
Sugar. As you look for ways for your family to become healthier you might want to consider the amount of sugar consumption in your family. Most people think of candy and junk food as the main culprits of sugar in a person’s diet. While it is true that these two areas are probably where the most sugar comes from in your diet, there are other areas you can look for when looking for sources of sugar in your diet. The following are a few suggestions you can use to reduce the amount of sugar in your family’s diet.
Select whole fruit instead of fruit juice. Children love fruit juice (adults too). However, most of the fruit juice you find in the supermarket is loaded with sugar additives. Opt for fresh, whole fruit like apples, oranges and grapes instead of their juice forms.
Don’t forget to eat your veggies. Vegetables are a great alternative to higher sugar foods. Plus, eating more vegetables will make you and your family healthier overall. Just be cautious to not overload on starchy vegetables like potatoes and corn which have a higher sugar content.
Pick brown rice instead of white rice. White rice contains mostly carbohydrates that convert to sugar after consumption. Brown rice is a better choice for you and your family.
Snack smarter. Select healthy snacks for your family to eat like fruit or raw vegetables. Protein snacks will help to keep hunger at bay. A light snack like a turkey and cheese roll-up will keep your children fuller longer than a bag of potato chips and is healthier overall.
