Helping your child with school and homework

Even though school is much different today than when you went to school many years ago one thing has not changed. Parents play a big role in the success your child will have in school. One of the easiest ways to begin helping your child succeed in school is to show an interest in it and what they do every day. Make asking your child about her day in school a part of your daily routine.

Once you begin asking your child about her day you’ll be able to take an active role. For example, if you find out that she has a spelling test every Wednesday, you can make it a part of your routine to go over the words every day with her. Have her show off her knowledge Tuesday night at dinner.

Make sure you become involved in your child’s homework. Do not accept a response of “I don’t have any” or “I did it in school” from your son or daughter. Ask to review the work to make sure it is complete and to see if perhaps they need some assistance. Always praise your child for a job well done.

If when you’re helping with homework you realize you don’t understand it, don’t panic! Read over the information your child has brought home to try and figure out what is being asked. If you still don’t understand you can always go to the Internet to find out more information.

Don’t give your child the answers to the questions and problems in his or her homework. That’s not the purpose of helping the child learn. You can give some hints or suggestions but don’t give the answers – that’s not going to help your child learn.

If your child has a large project due, get involved. Some of the best memories of growing up can come from the time you spend together making a volcano or a model of the solar system. Don’t tell your child what the project should be. Take your child to the craft store to pick up the supplies that will be needed for the project she decides and work on it together.
