How to prepare for a parent teacher conference

It doesn’t matter what your school calls it – a parent-teacher conference, a back to school night or a meet the teacher night – it is an important part of your child’s education.  I asked our contributor on education Mary Cantafio how you can prepare for a parent teacher conference.  This is what she told me:

Parent/Teacher Conference time is an opportunity for parents and teachers to discuss the progress or limitations of a child.  When parents are invited to the conference a set amount of time is given for discussion, therefore, it is imperative that you arrive prepared.  Don’t rely on your memory…WRITE DOWN ALL QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS!  If you feel more time is needed, don’t be afraid to ask the teacher to set up another meeting at a later date.

Here are several questions to help you through the conference.  Take some time to think about each question, asking your child to assist you along the way.

  1. How does your child currently feel about school?
  2. How often do you and your child discuss school, and what do you discuss?
  3. What school subject does your child enjoy the most?
  4. What are your feelings about your child’s homework assignments?
  5. Where and when does your child usually do his/her homework?  And what kind of homework assistance do you give?
  6. What, if any, schoolwork has your child expressed concern about?
  7. What concerns, if any, do you have about your child’s interactions with teachers, and/or other students?
  8. In what ways can the teacher help you and your child?
  9. What questions would you like to have answered at the conference?

Coming prepared will help maximize your child’s conference.  Remember, the teacher is there for the same reason that you are there…to HELP your child.  Use the time wisely.

Thanks for the post. Our first teacher conferences are coming up at the end of this month and I should really get prepared. I think I will go through the questions you listed and write everything down for myself.
