What color should you paint your baby’s nursery?

You’re pregnant – congratulations! It’s an exciting time for you. For many of us decorating your baby’s room is a fun and important part of getting ready for your new little one. There are so many color choices out there, so what color should you choose? It’s not just about what color you like – the color you select will have a big impact on the calmness and overall ambiance of your nursery. Here’s a simple color guide you can use when selecting the color for your baby’s nursery.

Not sure what color to decorate your nursery? Choosing the right nursery color isn’t just about what looks good or putting up your favorite color. The color you choose for your baby’s nursery can have a big impact on the calmness and overall look and feel of the nursery.

Here’s a simple color guide to help you set the right mood for your baby’s nursery:

Warm Colors

Yellow. Yellow is a very popular color for nurseries (especially if you don’t want to find out the sex of your baby), but it’s not a good choice if you want to provide a calm room for your baby. Bright yellow actually can cause anxiety and over stimulation in infants. If you must have yellow in your nursery consider painting just one wall yellow, or using yellow for some trim and accessories instead.

Red. I always remember red being referred to as a power color. This is true and for this reason it’s probably not the best choice for a nursery. It is too bright for children, and it also promotes energy in babies (not great for calming a fussy infant!). Once again, if you must have some red in your nursery keep it confined to one wall, select a more subdued terra cotta version, or use it in accessories and trim only.

Orange. It’s just as warm as red without all the drama and energy. However, it is still a stimulating color and probably should not be used in a nursery. Orange can work well in an older child’s room though.

Cool Colors

Blue. Blue isn’t just for boys, and it is probably the perfect choice for a nursery. It is soothing and creates a relaxing environment. You can make blue feminine for your little girl – how about a nice periwinkle color, or use blue for the walls and select all the accessories in a feminine color and pattern.

Green. The color of nature, green is very calming and relaxing. It’s a great choice for those moms wanting to be surprised at the gender of their child as well. Depending on the color green you select, it can work with your child as he or she grows and will work with a variety of themes as they get older.

Lilac. Why do people think little girls must have a pink nursery? Lilac is a soothing color and perfect for your nursery. Light greens and soft pinks work well for accessories for a lilac nursery.
