Tips and suggestions for coping with contractions
As your due date approaches, are you getting anxious about the pain of labor? No matter if you’re going to give birth naturally or use pain medications you’re going to feel the pain of contractions. This article will give you a few suggestions you man use to cope with the pain of contractions.
Breathe
Lamaze classes are a great idea – you’ll learn breathing techniques to use during labor. Also, a common reaction to pain is to hold your breath. It’s important to remember to breathe during labor.
Relax
Get yourself in a good mental place and this will help you relax. Think of your “happy place”, the time when you’ve felt most relaxed, or how wonderful you will feel when you hold your new child for the first time. The more tense your body the stronger the pain. As hard as it may be to do, try to relax during labor.
Don’t Watch the Clock
If you concentrate on the clock you’re going to get yourself worried, stressed or worked up. Let your spouse or partner be the clock watcher. What you need to do is to stay calm and focus on your breathing and trying to relax.
Rest
Once you feel your first contractions you need to rest. You’re going to need all the energy you can muster up to deliver your child. Once labor begins is not the time to make preparations or clean the baby’s room.
Distract Yourself
Try listening to music on your portable CD player or MP3 player. Bring a book with you to read during the milder contractions. If you like to craft you might consider bringing something with you to work on to distract yourself from the upcoming delivery.
Be Patient
From the time you experience your first contraction to the time when you actually deliver you child can be very long. It’s natural to be excited once you feel your contractions begin. If your labor is slow just try to be patient. You’ll be holding your beautiful baby soon enough!
