Raising happy children without all the material things
The world is a different place from when we were children (no matter what your age). Children seem to be growing up more quickly, demanding luxuries and items that are more adult. Children have cell phones, MP3 players, expensive video game systems, and all the latest popular clothes and shoes. Those parents who can’t afford these items might feel like they are short changing their children. Even if you can afford all these things is it a good idea to give them to your child? Can you raise a happy child today without giving them every expensive material thing? The answer is yes.
Sometimes I wonder why parents are so quick to give their children everything they ask for. Are they trying to keep up with every other child in the school? Do they feel guilty because they have to work outside the home and can’t be there when they get home from school? Do they just want to avoid the tantrums and yelling that comes from telling their child no? I won’t judge someone for what they do or the reasons why they do it. However, spoiling children with every material good known to mankind is not a way to raise a happy child.
No parent wants to see their child hurt. I would do everything in my power to prevent my children from being upset or disappointed. However, if I try and protect them from everything then they are not going to be able to learn to deal with the ups and downs of live in the real world. No is not a dirty word, and there is not a reason in the world why I can’t tell them that if they are misbehaving or asking for an expensive present.
It all comes down to the values you teach your children. There’s nothing wrong with rewarding a child for a job well done, but the reward should be commensurate with the accomplishment. Do you need to give your child a cell phone because she got good grades? Maybe a dinner together at her favorite restaurant with the rest of the family is a better reward.
What children need most is love and attention. The earlier you start spoiling your children with love and affection the less they will need material things to feel cared for. Stand firm to your principals, always letting your children know that they are loved.
