WAHM - a computer support business is a great idea
My husband is a software developer, and I can’t tell you how many times a week he gets a call from a relative or friend asking for assistance with a computer problem. Computers can be confusing for people, especially ones who don’t think they are technically savvy. You’re got to get your computer up and running, install software programs, and protect your computer from threats like viruses and spyware. Adding a new DVD drive or Internet camera can be a challenge for many people. Families with older children might look for someone to help make their computer safe for their teen to surf the Internet.
If you are technically inclined and enjoy working with computers, a home based computer support company might just be your ticket for success as a work at home mom. If you already have this knowledge, great! If not, you can probably find a good workshop or course at your local community college to teach you the basics for computer support.
What kind of tools do you need to get started with this business? If you’re going to provide hardware support, you’ll need a toolkit with computer-size screwdrivers, compressed air, and cloths safe to use on a computer monitor. Insurance is also important – computers are expensive investments for many people and you’ll want to be covered in case something goes wrong during your repairs.
If you’re going to provide computer support, you’ll want to have a website up and running that lists the services you provide as well as your rates. It also gives you some legitimacy as to your computer skills. Who would want to hire a computer support company that did not have a website? To find out what the standard charges are in your area call your local computer support companies or electronics stores to see what they charge for the same services. If you don’t have a website, I suggest using GoDaddy.com to purchase a domain name and HostGator for your hosting services.
There are so many services you can offer through your computer support company. How about providing one on one tutoring for someone about using the Internet or e-mail? Many older people are just getting into computers because their children and grandchildren like to send pictures via e-mail. If you’re proficient in a specific software program you can offer individualized instruction about it as well. You can offer services in installing new software programs and in their use. The possibilities are endless for this type of business.
